Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan – Regional office of Green Investment Principles (GIP) for BRI in Central Asia was launched during the first day of online training session “Green Finance Leadership Program in the context of Net Zero: Inauguration of the GIP Central Asia Chapter”.

2-day ONLINE TRAINING (27-28th of May) is co-organised by AIFC Green Finance Centre together with Beijing Institute of Finance and Sustainability (BIFS), Mongolian Sustainable Finance Association, Secretariat of Green Investment Principles (GIP) with support of PwC China and UK Pact. The aim of the training is to enhance sustainable development awareness and encourage wider participation of market players in promoting green finance in Central Asia. 

AIFC Green Finance Centre will be playing an important role in promotion of Green Investment Principles among financial institutions of Central Asia, delivering capacity building events through the GFLP platform, assisting the development of green projects database and scaling up sustainable finance in the region.

It is a great initiative which is aligned with a mandate of Astana International Financial Centre to develop and support green finance initiatives in the region”.

Dr. Ma Jun, Chairman of China Green Finance Committee, Founder and President of Beijing IFS noted: “Central Asia is an important region for BRI. We hope to assist the financial institutions operating in the region to green their financial flows and support their projects seeking investment. And we are truly happy to start this chapter together with our long-standing partner AIFC Green Finance Centre”.

Yaseen Anwar, Chairman of GIP Central Asia said: “This transition to a net zero economy is the greatest collective endeavor we must undertake going forward. How capital is allocated to support this effort is a priority, and as owners and stewards of capital, we have responsibilities to direct investment to activities that promote sustainable development”.

Green Investment Principles (GIP) were announced during the 2nd Belt and Road Initiative Forum in Beijing in 2019. GIP was developed by the Green Finance Committee of China and the City of London in collaboration with international organizations with the aim of creating an international network to improve environmental risk management of the Belt and Road investment.

The Astana International Financial Centre was created by the initiative of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Leader of the Nation, Nur-Sultan Nazarbayev as part of the “100 steps to implement five institutional reforms” national program. The Centre’s development strategy until 2025 was approved by the Management council of the AIFC during the council’s meeting on July 2, 2020. In accordance with the strategy, the vision of AIFC is in becoming the leading financial centre in the region that includes Central Asia, the Caucasus, EAEU countries, western China, Mongolia, and Eastern Europe.

The AIFC Green Finance Centre is an AIFC Organisation created to enable the development of green finance in Kazakhstan and Central Asia. The main goal is to bring investments to sustainable economy through trending financial instruments, such as green and social bonds. In addition to that, the AIFC Green Finance Centre, being a regional think-tank, provides strategic and business consulting in green finance and sustainable development to Governments, quasi-state organisations and entrepreneurs. The Centre provides initial assistance to potential issuers, investors and market players on preparations for the issuance of green bonds on the AIFC Exchange (Astana International Exchange).
